Biography
Martin DeWitt is recipient of the prestigous 2024 Lifetime Artist Award presented by the Circle of Friends/Depot Foundation, Duluth, Minnesota. He is Professor Emeritus in the School of Art & Design, Western Carolina University. DeWitt was Founding Director and Curator of the Fine Art Museum/WCU and formerly Director and Curator of the Tweed Museum of Art, University of Minnesota Duluth. In addition to his art administration, research and curatorial endeavors, DeWitt has an extensive exhibition record spanning over four decades. His paintings, drawings and mixed media constructions are included in numerous public and private collections. While Martin continues to maintain his studio practice, he also serves as an independent writer, curator, fine art consultant and historic preservation specialist.
Martin has been a leader of study abroad trips to Mexico and Italy teaching workshops in painting and drawing; he has facilitated exhibits and cultural exchanges between Duluth, Minnesota and Sister Cities in Canada, Japan, Mexico, Sweden, Russia, and Cuba. DeWitt recently joined the Asheville (NC), Sister Cities delegation traveling to San Cristobal de las Casas, Chiapas, Mexico to explore art and cultural exchanges. He led a group of Duluth (MN), contemporary artists who traveled by invitation from the Union of Writers and Artists of Cuba (UNEAC) to Havana and Pinar del Rio, Cuba. The prestigious "Tiburico International Salon" exhibition featured several of DeWitt's architectural constructions and mixed media paintings.
Martin retired from Western Carolina University then opened for business Martin DeWitt Studio + Fine Arts Services.
